Seven hundred years before this eclipse, a young lawyer left Tangier for Mecca and did not come home for twenty-nine years. Ibn Battuta’s first journey took him east along the North African coast, through Tunisia and Libya, across Egypt, and finally over the Red Sea to the Hejaz. On 2 August 2027 the Moon’s shadow follows almost exactly that route — and it does it in a little under three hours.

Tangier is where the shadow makes its African landfall. Totality here lasts 4 minutes 51 seconds, from 09:44:38 to 09:49:29 local time (UTC+1), with the Sun 38° above the horizon almost due east over the Strait. That is twelve seconds more than Tarifa gets on the Spanish side, because northern Morocco sits a little closer to the centre of the path.

It is also a mid-morning eclipse in a place with a genuinely interesting sky. Standing on the north-west corner of Africa, you have the Atlantic on one side and the Mediterranean on the other, and the umbra arrives from over the ocean. If you want to watch the shadow come rather than simply be under it, this is one of the better places on the whole track to try.

Cap Spartel and the shadow off the Atlantic

The single most interesting piece of ground near Tangier for this eclipse is Cap Spartel, about 9 km west of the city at the north-western tip of Africa, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. A lighthouse has stood on the headland since the 1860s; the cliffs drop away to open ocean; and the view to the west is completely unobstructed for as far as the eye can carry.

That matters because of where the shadow comes from. The umbra travels west to east, having crossed a long stretch of open Atlantic before it reaches land. At Tangier the Sun is in the east, at azimuth 95°, so in the last minute before totality you can turn your back on it, look out over the ocean, and watch a wall of darkness come at you across the water at well over two thousand kilometres an hour. Then it hits, and everything goes out.

Nearby, the Caves of Hercules open onto the Atlantic through a gap in the rock shaped — unmistakably, from inside — like a map of Africa. The Roman town of Cotta, with its garum factory, sits close by. The whole headland is a short drive from the city and will be no secret on the day, so arrive early.

The other side: Cap Malabata

East of the city, Cap Malabata looks back across the bay at Tangier and out along the Strait towards Spain. This is the direction the Sun will actually be in, and it is the better choice if your priority is a clean, low, uncluttered eastern horizon and a photograph with the town in it.

Coast or mountains? The northern Morocco choice

The path of totality sweeps across the whole of northern Morocco, so Tangier is a convenient base rather than the only option. Two broad strategies present themselves, and they trade off differently.

Stay on the coast

Easy access, good infrastructure, the drama of the Strait, and the chance of seeing the umbra come in over the sea. The risk is the marine layer: the Strait coast in summer can wake up under low cloud or sea fog, particularly with an easterly wind, and totality here is at 09:44 — early enough that overnight cloud may not have burned off.

Go inland and up

The Rif rises steeply behind the coast, and a hundred kilometres inland the atmosphere is drier and the marine layer is simply not there. Chefchaouen, the blue-washed town in the mountains south of Tetouan, is the best-known destination in the range and sits in genuinely spectacular terrain. Tetouan, with its UNESCO-listed medina, is closer to the coast and easier to reach.

The caution with the mountains is the mirror image of the coastal one: at 38° solar altitude in a steep-sided valley, a ridge to your east will simply hide the eclipse. If you go inland, choose an open plateau, a col or a west-facing slope with a long view east — not the floor of a gorge.

Check the exact spot, not the region

Much of northern Morocco lies inside the path, but the edges of a 258 km-wide band are still edges, and duration falls away quickly near them. Put the precise coordinates where you intend to stand into the interactive map and read off the duration before you commit to a hotel or a hilltop.

The city itself, and where to be in it

Tangier has been a port for three thousand years and a byword for the meeting of continents for most of them — Phoenician, Roman, Portuguese, Spanish, and for four decades in the twentieth century an International Zone administered by a committee of foreign powers, which is where a good deal of its reputation comes from. In the last decade it has been rebuilt on a considerable scale, with a new port, a new marina and the northern terminus of Morocco’s high-speed railway.

  • The Kasbah. The highest corner of the old city, with the Dar el Makhzen palace and terraces that look straight out over the Strait to Spain. The best combination of view and atmosphere in the city, and an open eastern aspect from several points along the walls.
  • Café Hafa. Terraces cut into the cliff above the sea, open since 1921, where the view is the entire point. It faces roughly north across the Strait rather than east, so check your sightline.
  • The Medina and the Grand Socco. Compact, walkable, and where you should be in the hour before the partial phases start at 08:40, mostly because the light on white walls during a deep partial is worth seeing.
  • The Corniche and the bay. A long east-facing crescent of beach — and an east-facing beach is exactly what a 38° Sun at azimuth 95° calls for. This is the simplest good answer in the city.

Ibn Battuta’s road

He is buried, by tradition, in the medina he left in 1325. It is worth taking a moment during the partial phases to consider that the shadow now over your head will be over Tunisia in twenty minutes, Libya in an hour and forty, Upper Egypt shortly after that, and the Hejaz — where he was heading — by half past one in the afternoon, Arabian time. He took the better part of a year and a half over the same journey.

Timings, safety and what to expect

All times below are Moroccan local time, UTC+1, one hour behind the Spanish clock just 14 km across the water.

  • 08:40 — first contact. Nothing visible without a filter; put your glasses on.
  • 09:00–09:35 — the crescent deepens. Watch shadows sharpen and pinhole crescents appear under any tree or lattice.
  • 09:44:38 — Baily’s beads, the diamond ring, then totality. Glasses off.
  • 09:47:03 — mid-eclipse. The corona at 38° over the Strait; Venus and probably Jupiter visible; a false sunset all round the horizon, deepest in the west.
  • 09:49:29 — the second diamond ring. Glasses back on immediately.
  • 11:00 — fourth contact. Two hours and twenty minutes from start to finish.

Eye protection certified to ISO 12312-2 is required for the 65 minutes before totality and the 70 minutes after it. Weather in early August

Northern Morocco in August is hot, dry and largely cloudless inland, and pleasantly moderated on the coast by the sea. Rain is very unlikely. The realistic risks are the coastal marine layer in the morning and — when a hot easterly chergui blows off the interior — dust haze. Neither is likely to ruin the day, but both argue for having a second site in mind and a vehicle to reach it.

Getting there

  • By air. Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport handles international and domestic traffic, and Morocco is well connected to Europe. Casablanca is the main long-haul hub.
  • By rail. Al Boraq, Africa’s first high-speed line, links Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca in a little over two hours — a genuinely comfortable way to arrive from the south of the country.
  • By sea. Ferries cross the Strait from Tarifa to Tangier Ville and from Algeciras to Tangier Med. The Tarifa route is the fast one and lands you in the city itself. Crossing on the morning of 2 August is not advisable — totality is at 09:44 and a delayed sailing costs you the eclipse. Cross on 1 August.
  • By road. Modern motorways link Tangier with Tetouan, Rabat and Fez. Distances in northern Morocco are short by North African standards, which makes cloud-dodging on the morning genuinely practical.

Why is Tangier’s eclipse an hour earlier than Tarifa’s?

Only on the clock. Morocco keeps UTC+1 in August and Spain keeps UTC+2, so the two countries’ clocks differ by an hour across a 14 km strait. In real time Tangier’s mid-eclipse is 21 seconds before Tarifa’s — the shadow crosses the Strait almost instantly.

Where is the best place near Tangier to watch?

For an unobstructed eastern horizon, the city’s east-facing bay, Cap Malabata, or the Kasbah terraces. For the chance of seeing the umbra arrive over the Atlantic, Cap Spartel to the west. Inland, the Rif offers drier air but you must avoid ridges to the east of your position, because the Sun is only 38° up.

What are the cloud prospects in northern Morocco in August?

Good. August is essentially rainless and inland skies are usually clear. The main risk is a morning marine layer along the Strait coast, which matters because totality here is at 09:44. Having a car and an inland fallback site is worthwhile.
