At 12:42:32 on Monday 2 August 2027, the Moon’s shadow will finish crossing Libya, come over the escarpment, and put out the Sun above a depression of palm groves and salt lakes near the Egyptian border. Siwa Oasis is the first place in Egypt to see totality — the whole of its 5 minutes 29 seconds is over by 12:48:01, fourteen minutes before Luxor even begins.

Siwa is also, by a distance, the strangest and most atmospheric place in Egypt to see it. It lies about 50 km from the Libyan frontier and some 300 km from the nearest coastal town, in a depression that sits below sea level, surrounded on the south by the Great Sand Sea. Its people speak Siwi, an Amazigh (Berber) language unrelated to Arabic, and the oasis has held on to a culture and an architecture that exist nowhere else in the country.

The history is not modest either. On a rock at Aghurmi stand the remains of the temple of the Oracle of Amun, which was famous across the ancient Mediterranean, and which Alexander the Great crossed the desert to consult in 331 BC. Whatever it told him, he never repeated. Above the modern town rise the melted mud-and-salt walls of the Shali fortress.

What Siwa asks in return is a long journey and a compromise on duration: 5m 29s rather than the 6m 20s available on the central line. The question this page tries to answer honestly is whether that is a good trade. For a certain kind of traveller it very clearly is.

Egypt’s first sight of the shadow

The shadow arrives from the west, having already crossed the Atlantic, southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Benghazi loses the Sun about fourteen and a half minutes before Siwa does. Then it is Egypt’s turn, and Siwa is first in the queue.

The clock lies to you here

Egypt keeps a single time zone, UTC+3, whose natural meridian runs far to the east of Siwa. The practical effect is that the oasis runs well behind its own clock: local solar noon at Siwa falls after one in the afternoon by the wristwatch. So although totality is at 12:42 — which sounds like midday — the Sun has not reached its highest point yet.

That is why the geometry here looks slightly different from the Nile valley. At mid-eclipse the Sun stands 76° above the horizon at an azimuth of 140° — high, but noticeably to the south-east rather than dead overhead. Seventy-six degrees is the lowest of any Egyptian totality site and still far too high for anything on the ground to interfere. What it does give you is a marginally more sculptural view: the corona sits in a direction rather than straight up, which makes it easier to hold in the same frame as a dune, a palm or a fortress wall.

Where to stand: an oracle, a fortress and a sand sea

Siwa is one of the rare places where the foreground genuinely competes with the eclipse. A few options, in rough order of ambition.

Aghurmi and the Oracle

The temple of the Oracle of Amun sits on a rocky outcrop at Aghurmi, a short distance east of the modern town, with the ruins of a settlement built up around and over it. This is the site Alexander reached in 331 BC after a desert crossing that his historians turned into legend. Standing here as the Sun is put out is about as resonant as eclipse-watching gets. Assume, though, that a small site on a rock will be managed, restricted or ticketed on the day — nobody can tell you now what the arrangements will be, and you should not treat access as guaranteed.

Shali

The old fortified town of Shali rises out of the middle of Siwa, built from kershef — blocks of salt-rich mud that set like concrete in a place where it essentially never rains. When freak rains did come in the 1920s, much of it dissolved, which is why it now looks less like a ruin than like something melted. The upper levels give height over the palm groves and the lakes.

Several shallow, intensely saline lakes lie in the depression, fringed with white crusts and improbably blue in the sun. For an eclipse they offer the one thing the desert struggles with: reflection. A black Sun with orange twilight running all the way round the horizon, doubled in still salt water, is a photograph worth planning for.

The edge of the Great Sand Sea

South of the oasis the dunes begin, and go on for hundreds of kilometres. A dune crest gives you a 360° horizon and complete silence, which is the ideal environment for watching the shadow approach and depart. This needs a 4x4 and a local driver — both are readily arranged in Siwa, and no part of it should be attempted independently.

Underrated. With the Sun 76° up you can watch from anywhere, and a garden among the palms gives shade before and after, dappled crescent-shaped sun-spots on the ground through the partial phases, and springs to sit in afterwards.

The honest trade: 5m 29s and no way to move

Siwa does not sit on the central line, and the arithmetic is straightforward: 5m 29s against the 6m 20s available at Luxor or Berenice. You are giving up 51 seconds — about thirteen per cent of the available totality — for the setting.

The second cost is less obvious and matters more. In the Nile valley, an unpromising sky at eleven in the morning is a solvable problem: there are roads in every direction and other totality towns an hour away. In Siwa there is one asphalt road to the coast and a desert route to Bahariya. Whatever the sky over the oasis is doing at 12:42, that is your eclipse. You are committed.

Against that: the odds are excellent. This is one of the driest inhabited places on Earth — a town whose principal building material dissolves in rain has not had much rain — and August cloud is close to a non-event. The realistic atmospheric risk in the Western Desert is blowing dust, not overcast.

Who should choose Siwa

Someone who has already seen totality, or who cares as much about where they are as about how long it lasts, and who is happy to spend two days getting there and two days getting back. If this is your first total eclipse, or your trip is short, the honest advice is to take the six minutes and the infrastructure in the Nile valley and save Siwa for a cooler month.

Getting to Siwa

There is no airport for visitors and no railway. Every route to Siwa is a road, and all of them are long.

From Marsa Matruh. The standard approach: roughly 300 km of asphalt south across the desert, about four hours, from the Mediterranean coast town of Marsa Matruh. Matruh itself is reachable from Alexandria along the coast road, and has rail and air links that vary by season. This is the route almost everyone uses and the only one that does not require special arrangements.

From Cairo. Around 750 km all in, most commonly via the coast, so nine to eleven hours of driving. Do it over two days, or take an overnight bus and lose a night rather than a day.

From Bahariya Oasis. A desert route links the two oases, several hundred kilometres of sand and gravel. It has historically required a 4x4, a guide and paperwork, and the requirements change. Do not plan on it without confirming the current position with an operator who runs it regularly. As a way of combining Egypt’s two great oases it is superb; as a way of arriving with a deadline it is not.

A frontier region, with the rules to match

Siwa lies close to the Libyan border. There are checkpoints on the approach roads, passports are required, and travel off the asphalt — particularly south and west into the sand — is regulated and sometimes closed. Rules change with circumstances. Confirm them shortly before you travel, use licensed local operators for anything in the dunes, and build a day of slack into the plan.

Arrive on 31 July or 1 August at the latest. Totality is at 12:42:32 and the partial phases begin at 11:22 — the earliest first contact anywhere in Egypt.

Siwa in August: heat, springs and manners

August is not the season anyone would choose for Siwa, and going anyway is the price of this eclipse. Daytime temperatures in the depression are severe, and the totality falls at the hottest part of the day. The oasis does, however, handle heat better than open desert: there is dense palm shade, there is water, and the springs are genuinely restorative in the evening.

The oasis is famous for dates and olives, and the groves are the reason anything is here at all. Springs and pools are scattered through them; some are hot, some cold, and the cold ones are the ones you want.

Siwa is a conservative community, not a resort

This is a small, traditional, Siwi-speaking society that has had a complicated relationship with tourism. Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees, and that includes men; be careful about swimming in the springs, particularly women, and ask locally about which pools are appropriate and when; and always ask before photographing people. An eclipse will bring more outsiders to Siwa in one week than it normally sees in a season. Be the sort of visitor that makes the next one welcome.

Two more things worth seeing while you wait for the shadow: Gebel al-Mawta, the “Mountain of the Dead”, a hill north of town honeycombed with rock-cut tombs of the Late, Ptolemaic and Roman periods, some with surviving painted decoration; and the Spring of the Sun, the pool traditionally associated with Cleopatra, which is a pleasant place to be at dusk and unbearable at noon.

Why does Siwa get less totality than Luxor?

Because it sits further from the central line of the path. Duration is greatest along the middle of the shadow and falls away toward the edges, so Siwa collects 5m 29s against the 6m 20s at Luxor and the 6m 23.2s maximum near Sohag. It is still a long totality by any historical standard.

How do I get to Siwa, and how long does it take?

By road only. The normal route is about 300 km and four hours south from Marsa Matruh on the Mediterranean coast; from Cairo it is roughly 750 km and nine to eleven hours. A desert route from Bahariya exists but needs a 4x4, a guide and current permissions. Arrive at least a day before the eclipse.

Do I need a permit to visit Siwa?

The town itself is normally reached without special paperwork, but this is a border area with checkpoints, so carry your passport. Will the Sun be high enough to see easily?

Comfortably. It will be 76° above the horizon at an azimuth of 140° — high in the south-east. That is the lowest of Egypt’s totality sites and still steep enough that no dune, palm or wall can block it. For context, the 2026 eclipse over Spain puts the Sun at just 2–12°.

What is the weather likely to be?

Very hot and extremely dry. Cloud in August is close to a non-event here — this is one of the driest inhabited places on Earth — and the only realistic atmospheric risk is wind-blown dust dulling the corona. Plan seriously for heat: shade, four litres of water per person per day, electrolyte salts, and no exertion around midday.
