It is the image everybody wants: a black Sun ringed with silver fire, hanging above the Great Pyramid. It is going to be all over the internet in August 2027, and almost every version of it will be fake, because the pyramids of Giza are not in the path of totality. On 2 August 2027 Giza sees a 95.22% partial eclipse, maximum at 12:55:42. The Sun never disappears here.

The plateau lies about 291 km from the central line. The nearest edge of the path is roughly 175 km south — the same journey as from central Cairo, which is only 12 km away. No amount of altitude, clear air or good fortune changes that. Totality is a matter of geometry, and the geometry says Giza is outside.

Which does not mean nothing happens here. A 95% eclipse over the last surviving wonder of the ancient world is a genuinely strange and beautiful thing, and this page describes exactly what it will look like. But if you have flown to Egypt for the eclipse, the honest advice is the same as everywhere else in the north: see the pyramids on another day, and spend this Monday travelling south.

What a 95% partial eclipse really looks like

The single most misleading thing about eclipse percentages is that they sound like a progress bar. They are not. Obscuration measures how much of the Sun’s area is hidden, and the human visual system responds to brightness on a roughly logarithmic scale while adapting continuously as the light falls. The result is that a 95% eclipse delivers nothing like 95% of a total eclipse. It delivers perhaps two per cent of it.

What you will see at Giza

  • A slow, odd dimming. Between 11:32 and about 12:40 most people would not notice anything unless told. Your pupils do the work for you.
  • Sharpened shadows. As the Sun narrows to a crescent it becomes a line source rather than a disc, so shadow edges get noticeably crisper in one direction. On limestone this is startling.
  • Crescents on the ground. Any small gap — palm fronds, a straw hat, the holes in a cracker — acts as a pinhole camera and projects the shape of the eclipsed Sun. By 12:50 the ground under any tree will be covered in identical thin crescents.
  • A flat, silver light. Near maximum the desert loses its warmth of colour. Everything goes slightly grey-blue and slightly wrong. Photographs taken then look under-exposed even when they are not.
  • A drop in temperature. Real, measurable, and very welcome at one o’clock on an August afternoon on the Giza plateau.

What you will not see

  • The corona. Not a trace. It requires the photosphere to be completely hidden.
  • Darkness. The sky stays blue. The remaining 4.78% of the Sun is still tens of thousands of times brighter than a full Moon; street lights will not come on.
  • Stars or planets. None.
  • The diamond ring, Baily’s beads, prominences, shadow bands, the 360° horizon glow. None of these exist outside the path.
  • Any moment when it is safe to look without a filter. Not one second, from 11:32 to 14:16.

People who have seen both are unanimous and slightly tedious about it: a deep partial eclipse and a total eclipse are not two points on the same scale. They are different events that happen to share a cause.

The Sun over the plateau at 12:55

If you are going to watch from Giza anyway, there is a lovely piece of geometry to enjoy.

At maximum eclipse the Sun stands 78° above the horizon at an azimuth of 173° — seven degrees east of due south, and close to its highest point of the day. The Great Pyramid’s base is aligned to the cardinal directions with an accuracy of a few arc-minutes, an achievement nobody has fully explained; its sides face true north, south, east and west more precisely than most modern buildings manage. So at the moment the Moon covers 95% of the Sun, the pyramid’s shadow will be at its shortest of the day and pointing almost exactly along its own north–south axis.

The Sphinx, meanwhile, faces due east — towards the sunrise, and towards a Sun that on this particular morning will already have a bite taken out of it by the time most visitors reach the plateau gates.

There is a deeper resonance too. The pyramid form itself is bound up with the solar cult of Heliopolis, a few kilometres north-east across the river: the benben stone, the rays of Ra, the king ascending on sunlight. Khufu’s dismantled cedar boat — now displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum beside the plateau — is usually read as a solar barque. For a few minutes on 2 August 2027, the god those monuments were built around will be reduced to a hairline crescent over them. That is worth standing outside for, even at 95%.

Photographing it — and spotting the fakes

The physical problem with the famous shot is not artistic, it is optical. At 78° altitude the Sun is almost overhead. To get the Sun and a pyramid in the same frame at anything larger than a speck, you would need to be lying at the base of the monument shooting almost straight up — and the Sun would still be tiny, because a wide lens renders it about half a degree across.

Which is why every dramatic “eclipse over the pyramids” image you will see is a composite: a long-lens Sun dropped onto a separate landscape, usually with the Sun rendered ten or twenty times its true size and often with a corona that cannot occur at this location at all. Enjoy them as art. Do not plan a trip around reproducing one.

What actually works

  • A filtered long lens on the Sun alone. A certified solar filter over the front of the lens — never a screw-in filter at the back — and 400 mm or more will give a clean crescent. This is the only way to photograph the partial phases, and it is the same discipline as photographing any partial eclipse anywhere.
  • Wide shots of the landscape, not the Sun. The real story at Giza is what the light does to the limestone. Set up a wide frame on the plateau, lock the exposure manually, and shoot the same composition every five minutes from 12:20 to 13:20. The sequence is far more interesting than any single frame.
  • Pinhole crescents. A colander, a card with holes punched in your initials, the gaps in a woven hat — projected onto pale stone or a white sheet. This is the best photograph most people will get, and it is safe.
  • People. Faces looking up through eclipse glasses, in that flat silver light, with pyramids behind them. Nobody else will bother.

Never look through an unfiltered viewfinder

An optical viewfinder pointed at a 95% eclipsed Sun concentrates enough energy to injure your eye instantly and can destroy a camera sensor in live view. Filter goes on the front of the lens, before the light enters the optics, and stays there for the whole event — because at Giza there is no totality to take it off for. What to do instead on 2 August

Giza is 175 km from totality. That is a morning’s drive, and it converts 95.22% into the most extraordinary six minutes of your life. Here are the options in order of sense.

Sleep inside the path

The strongest plan by far. Take the sleeper or a domestic flight south on 31 July or 1 August, wake up in Luxor (6m 20s), Sohag (6m 22s) or Asyut (6m 07s), and remove travel from eclipse day altogether. Drive to Bahariya Oasis

Bahariya is around 285 km south-west of Giza in a straight line, roughly 370 km by the desert highway, and gets 6 minutes 17 seconds. Black Desert cones, white chalk formations and a horizon with nothing on it. Totality there starts at 12:50:16, so this is an overnight-before plan, not a dawn dash.

Drive or take the train to Minya

Minya is about 211 km south and gets 4 minutes 7 seconds from 12:55:34 — note that this is almost exactly the clock time of Giza’s maximum partial. Two hundred kilometres is the difference between a curiosity and a total solar eclipse. It is the shortest journey in Egypt that buys you the real thing from the Cairo area.

Check your actual coordinates

If a tour is being sold to you as an eclipse experience at the pyramids, that tour is selling a partial eclipse, whatever the brochure implies. Put the exact spot where you will be standing at 12:55 into our interactive map and look at whether it falls inside the gold band. A few kilometres genuinely matters, and 175 of them matter absolutely.

Practicalities on the plateau

If you have decided to stay — because of a fixed itinerary, a group, or simply because seeing the pyramids matters more to you than seeing a corona — here is how to do it well.

  • Heat first, eclipse second. Maximum falls at 12:55 in early August on an open, shadeless limestone plateau. Highs in the mid-to-high thirties Celsius are normal and there is almost no shade beyond the visitor buildings. Carry three or four litres of water per person, wear a wide brim and loose long sleeves, and have a vehicle you can retreat into.
  • Go early. The site opens in the morning; the eclipse begins at 11:32. Being on the plateau before the crowds, with a chosen spot, is worth more than any equipment.
  • Pick open ground. The panorama point south-west of the three pyramids gives you all of them in one frame, plenty of sky, and room to set up. The Sun at 78° means nothing on the ground can block your view of it anyway — choose your position for the foreground.
  • Assume it will be busy. Giza is the most visited site in Egypt on an ordinary day. On this one it will be extraordinary. Whether special arrangements, ticketing or timed entry will apply is not something anyone can state today — check official channels closer to the time.
  • Glasses on, continuously. ISO 12312-2, for all 164 minutes, for everybody, with children supervised the whole time.

And afterwards, be honest with yourself about what you saw. A 95% partial eclipse over the Great Pyramid is a wonderful thing to have witnessed. It is also, on the same afternoon and 175 km away, being comprehensively outclassed.

How dark will it get at the pyramids?

Can I photograph the total eclipse over the Great Pyramid?

Do I still need eclipse glasses at 95%?

Absolutely, for every second from 11:32 to 14:16. Deep partial eclipses cause more eye injuries than total ones, because the reduced glare makes staring feel safe while the exposed sliver of Sun is still bright enough to burn the retina painlessly. Use only ISO 12312-2 certified filters.

Is it worth watching from Giza at all?

If you are already committed to being there, yes — a 95% eclipse over the pyramids is a memorable afternoon. If you are choosing where to be, no. Travel south and see totality; visit Giza on a different day of the same trip.
