El Quseir Total Eclipse
An old Ottoman port that just scrapes inside the northern edge of the path.
Start with the honest headline: El Quseir is inside the path of totality, but only just. It gets 2 minutes 28 seconds — real totality, genuinely worth having, and less than forty per cent of what places a couple of hours down the road will see. El Quseir sits near the northern edge of the shadow, and near an edge is an expensive place to stand.
The good news is that the remedy is short, cheap and entirely within your control. The coast road runs south. Drive roughly 40 to 60 km toward Marsa Alam and you roughly double your totality. Carry on the full 135 km and you get 5m 29s. Nothing about this requires an expedition, a permit or a special vehicle — just a car, an early start and the willingness to not watch the eclipse from your hotel balcony.
That said, El Quseir is a lovely and underrated place: an Ottoman fortress town on a coral shelf, the site of the Roman harbour of Myos Hormos, and the seaward end of the oldest road between the Nile and the Red Sea. It is a perfectly good place to sleep during eclipse week. It is simply not where you should be standing at 13:06:38 on Monday 2 August.

Why El Quseir only gets two and a half minutes
The Moon’s shadow lands on Egypt as an ellipse roughly 258 km wide. Down the middle of it, totality runs past six minutes. At the two edges it is zero. In between, the duration does not fall away evenly — it holds up well across the broad middle and then collapses very quickly in the last few tens of kilometres before the edge. El Quseir is in that collapsing zone.
The number that explains everything: magnitude 1.003
Eclipse magnitude is the fraction of the Sun’s diameter covered by the Moon. At the point of greatest eclipse it is 1.079 — the Moon’s disc overlaps the Sun’s by nearly eight per cent, which is a comfortable margin and buys a long totality. At El Quseir the magnitude is 1.003. The Moon covers the Sun by three parts in a thousand. That is the entire story: a barely-larger Moon crossing a barely-smaller Sun takes very little time to get across it.

There is one further reason to move rather than gamble. The exact position of the edge of the path depends on the profile of the Moon’s limb — its mountains and valleys — which means predicted edge positions carry a small uncertainty of order a kilometre or two. That is irrelevant if you are 60 km inside the shadow. It is not something to shrug at if you are near the boundary.
How far to drive, and in which direction
South. Every kilometre south along the coast road takes you deeper into the shadow. This is the single most useful sentence on this page.
Option 1 — 40 to 60 km south: roughly double the totality
Under an hour’s drive on the coastal highway, and it takes you from 2m 28s to somewhere in the region of four and a half to five minutes. This is by far the best return on effort available anywhere on the Egyptian coast: an hour of driving buys you more than two extra minutes of corona. Pick a spot on the map on this page, check the number it gives you, and go and stand there.
Option 2 — 135 km south to Marsa Alam: 5m 29s
Around two hours. You get Marsa Alam’s full 5m 29s, plus a town with hotels, shade, fuel, food and an airport. If you were going to spend the day driving anyway, this is the clean version of the plan — and it is worth considering as a place to actually base yourself rather than merely visit.
Option 3 — inland to the Nile valley: 6m 11s
The desert road west from El Quseir through Wadi Hammamat reaches Qift on the Nile in roughly 180 km, close to Qena, which gets 6m 11s. This is the ancient route, and it is a real option if you want to combine the coast with the Nile valley — but it is a long drive across empty desert, and it should be done the day before, not on eclipse morning.
Do not drive north
Safaga and Hurghada lie outside the path. Hurghada, 140 km north, sees 98.5% coverage and zero seconds of totality — a completely different and far lesser event. If you are staying in El Quseir and someone suggests joining friends up the coast for the day, that is the one direction that turns a good eclipse into no eclipse at all.
One timing detail for the drive: totality happens later the further south you go. It begins at 13:06:38 in El Quseir, but at 13:08:02 in Marsa Alam and 13:10:44 in Berenice. Driving south therefore buys you a little slack as well as a lot of corona. Do not spend it — be stationary and set up by 12:15 regardless.
If you stay put: what 2m 28s is actually like
Suppose you cannot drive — no car, small children, a medical reason, a group that will not move. El Quseir is still a total eclipse, and that deserves saying plainly, because a short totality and a deep partial are not remotely the same thing. Two and a half minutes of corona is more than the 2026 eclipse over Spain offers anywhere, and infinitely more than 99% coverage anywhere.
Being near the edge even brings a few phenomena that central-line observers miss. With the Moon only fractionally larger than the Sun, Baily’s beads — sunlight streaming through lunar valleys — last noticeably longer, and the thin pink arc of the chromosphere can stay visible for a good portion of totality rather than flashing past in a second. The diamond rings are drawn out. Photographers who specifically want beads and chromosphere sometimes choose edge sites on purpose.
What you lose is the thing most people come for. The corona is at its most spectacular when the sky is at its darkest, and near the edge the sky never gets fully dark: enough sunlight leaks around the limb to keep a bright glow low on one side. The faint outer streamers will be washed out. And 2m 28s is not enough time to look, then use binoculars, then photograph, then simply stand there. You will get to do about two of those four things.
If you only have 148 seconds, do not photograph
Set a camera on a tripod, start an intervalometer, and then ignore it completely. Trying to operate equipment through a short totality is the most reliable way to travel a very long distance and remember nothing. Look up with your own eyes from 13:06:38 to 13:09:06, and let the machine do its own work.
The town: a fortress, a Roman harbour and the road to Qift
El Quseir has been the crossing point between the Nile and the Red Sea for a very long time, for the simple reason that here the desert between the two is at its narrowest.
Myos Hormos
Just north of the modern town lies Quseir al-Qadim — “Old Quseir” — which archaeologists identify with the Graeco-Roman port of Myos Hormos. Along with Berenice far to the south, it handled Rome’s trade with India and Arabia. Excavations have turned up documents, textiles and imported goods that map the route in detail.
The Wadi Hammamat road
The route inland to Coptos, modern Qift, runs through Wadi Hammamat, a corridor of dark greywacke and basalt quarried since the Old Kingdom and covered in inscriptions left by quarrying and trading expeditions across three thousand years. It is one of the most densely written-on landscapes in Egypt.
The Ottoman port
The fort that dominates the middle of the modern town dates from the Ottoman period, when El Quseir served as the principal Egyptian embarkation point for pilgrims crossing to Arabia for the hajj, and as a grain port supplying the Hijaz. The old town around it retains coral-block buildings and a genuinely different feel from the purpose-built resort coast to the north and south.
All of which makes El Quseir a good base and an interesting few days. It is worth being clear that none of it changes the arithmetic on eclipse day.
A practical plan for eclipse day
If you are staying in El Quseir, here is the version of 2 August that works.
- The night before, pick your spot on the map by name and by kilometre marker, not by vague intention. Fill the fuel tank. Load the water — three to four litres per person — the salts, the hats, and something that makes shade.
- Leave by 09:30. The coast road will be carrying an unusual amount of traffic in one direction, there are routine checkpoints, and you do not want to be negotiating either at noon.
- Be parked and set up by 12:15 at the latest. First contact where you are will be around 11:45; totality will fall between roughly 13:07 and 13:11 depending how far south you got.
- Have shade you control. An umbrella or a vehicle you can sit in. Standing on an exposed coastal flat from noon to two in August is not a small ask.
- Do not drive home immediately. Everyone leaves at once, in the heat, tired and slightly euphoric. Wait an hour in the shade.
And if all of that sounds like more than you want to take on: book Marsa Alam instead and sleep 300 metres from where you will be standing.

Yes. It is inside the path, and totality runs from 13:06:38 to 13:09:06 local time (EEST, UTC+3) — 2 minutes 28 seconds. That is real totality, corona and all. It is simply much shorter than places further south, because El Quseir lies near the northern edge of the path.
How far south do I need to drive to double my totality?
Roughly 40 to 60 km along the coast road toward Marsa Alam, which is under an hour. That lifts you from 2m 28s to somewhere around four and a half to five minutes. Going the full 135 km to Marsa Alam gives 5m 29s. Check a specific spot on the map above before you set out — the gain is steepest in the first 50 km.
Which direction should I definitely not go?
Is a short totality still worth travelling for?
Absolutely — totality of any length is a different order of experience from a partial eclipse. But since you are already in Egypt and a one-hour drive more than doubles it, there is very little reason to accept the short version. Consider 2m 28s your fallback, not your plan.
Why is the duration so sensitive to a few dozen kilometres here?
Because El Quseir is near the path edge, where the Moon barely covers the Sun — the eclipse magnitude here is 1.003, against 1.079 at the point of greatest eclipse. Duration falls away very steeply in the last stretch before the edge and changes only gently near the middle, so kilometres are worth far more seconds here than they would be at Luxor.
Is El Quseir a good place to stay for eclipse week?
It is a good place to sleep, and a genuinely interesting town — an Ottoman fort, the Roman harbour of Myos Hormos nearby, quieter and more characterful than the big resort strips. Just treat eclipse day as a day trip south. If you would rather not drive at all, base yourself in Marsa Alam.
