There is no building on Earth more explicitly engineered around the Sun than the Great Temple of Abu Simbel. Twice a year, on 22 February and 22 October, the rising sun drives a shaft of light some sixty metres through the rock and lights the faces of three of the four gods seated in the sanctuary. Ramesses II’s architects built a solar clock the size of a cliff, in the thirteenth century BC, and it still works.

On 2 August 2027 that same temple gets 92.00% of a solar eclipse — the lowest obscuration of any location on this site. Abu Simbel lies south of the path of totality, and by a long way: the nearest edge is somewhere over 250 km to the north. The greatest solar event of the century in Egypt will happen almost entirely above and beyond it.

The one consolation is spectacular in its own right. At maximum eclipse, at 13:08:37, the Sun stands 85° above the horizon here — five degrees from the exact zenith, the highest Sun of any place covered on this site. If you are going to watch a partial eclipse from practically directly overhead, in front of four twenty-metre colossi, this is the place to do it. But if you want totality, this page is about how far north you have to go.

A temple built to measure the Sun

Abu Simbel is not decorated with sun imagery. It is aligned. The whole complex was cut into a sandstone cliff above the Nile facing east, so that the facade catches the sunrise, and the axis of the Great Temple was set so that on two dates each year the light would reach all the way into the innermost chamber.

The 22 February and 22 October alignment

On those two mornings the sun clears the horizon, enters the temple mouth between the colossi, travels the length of the hypostyle hall and the vestibule beyond it, and falls on the four seated figures carved from the living rock at the back: the deified Ramesses II, Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhty — and, on the far left, Ptah. Ptah is associated with the underworld and with darkness, and the alignment leaves him unlit. Whether that was intended or is a consequence of his position, it is one of the most quietly impressive details in Egyptian architecture.

And then it was moved

Between 1964 and 1968 the entire complex was cut into more than a thousand blocks weighing up to thirty tonnes each, lifted about 65 metres higher and set some 200 metres back from the river, to save it from the rising water of Lake Nasser behind the Aswan High Dam. It was reassembled inside an artificial hill built to hold it. The UNESCO campaign that achieved this is the reason the modern World Heritage system exists.

Reconstructing a solar alignment on a rebuilt site, using the surveying tools of the mid-1960s, was genuinely hard, and the modern dates of the illumination are 22 February and 22 October. That the phenomenon happens at all after the temple was taken apart and put back together on a different hill is, by any standard, a remarkable piece of engineering.

What is here

  • The Great Temple, fronted by four seated colossi of Ramesses II about twenty metres high, one of them collapsed in antiquity and re-erected in fragments exactly as it fell.
  • The Small Temple, dedicated to Hathor and to Queen Nefertari, whose statues on the facade stand the same height as the king’s — almost unheard of in Egyptian royal sculpture.
  • Lake Nasser in front of it: 500 km of artificial inland sea running south to the Sudanese border, and a horizon of nothing but water and desert.

The Sun almost overhead: 85 degrees

Abu Simbel sits at latitude 22.34°N, just north of the Tropic of Cancer. In early August the noon Sun is therefore very nearly vertical, and the eclipse maximum at 13:08:37 catches it 85° up at an azimuth of 205°. That is the highest Sun of any location on this site — higher than Luxor’s 82°, higher than Aswan’s 83°.

Practically, it means two things. First, nothing can obstruct your view: no cliff, no colossus, no building. Second, shadows at maximum will be almost non-existent — a standing person casts a shadow barely longer than their own foot. The colossi, which normally throw dramatic shadows across the terrace, will have almost none. It makes for an unusual and slightly disorientating scene even before the eclipse deepens.

It also means there is no shade. None. Abu Simbel in early August at one in the afternoon is one of the most extreme heat environments any tourist will voluntarily stand in, and the shadow of a wall at 85° solar altitude is about as wide as the wall is thick.

Heat is the real hazard here

Early-August highs in far southern Egypt regularly exceed 40°C and the site is open rock and sand with an artificial hill behind it. Standard visits are scheduled for the early morning for exactly this reason. A 13:08 eclipse maximum means being outside during the worst hour of the day. Carry four litres of water per person, bring your own shade, and treat an air-conditioned vehicle as essential equipment rather than a luxury.

How far north you must travel

Abu Simbel is the furthest any of these pages will ask you to travel. The path of totality is entirely north of here, and the road network gives you exactly one option: the highway to Aswan and then up the Nile.

The road from Abu Simbel to Aswan is about 280 km across open desert and takes roughly three hours in normal conditions. Note the trap in the table: Aswan is not far enough. It gets 99.82% and no totality, and you must continue at least another 15 km north of the city to cross the edge, or 43 km to reach Kom Ombo and a proper three and a half minutes.

Adding it up: Abu Simbel to the nearest worthwhile totality is around 300 km of road, and Abu Simbel to Luxor and six minutes is something in the region of 500 km. That is not an eclipse-day journey under any circumstances. It is a move you make on 31 July or 1 August.

The sensible itinerary

Visit Abu Simbel before the eclipse, on any day other than 2 August — a short flight or an early road transfer from Aswan, back the same afternoon. Then move north up the valley and be settled inside the path by the evening of 1 August. You get the temple in the morning light it was designed for, and totality two days later. Doing it the other way round costs you the eclipse.

If you are here on the day: what 92% brings

Some people will be at Abu Simbel on 2 August — a fixed Lake Nasser cruise, a group itinerary, or a deliberate choice to photograph a partially eclipsed Sun above the colossi. It is a defensible choice, as long as you know what you are getting.

The eclipse runs from 11:42 to 14:30. At maximum, 92% of the Sun is hidden and about 8% remains — roughly a twelfth of the disc, which is a great deal of Sun. The sky will stay blue and bright. There will be no corona, no diamond ring, no stars, no horizon twilight ring and no darkness. What you will get is:

  • A distinct cooling — welcome beyond words at this site at this hour.
  • Flat, colourless light on sandstone that is normally almost orange. The change in the facade’s colour will be the most photogenic thing about the day.
  • Crescent-shaped pinhole images if you make them; there are essentially no trees here to make them for you.
  • An extraordinarily strange sight through eclipse glasses: a thin crescent Sun almost directly overhead, which forces you into the least dignified posture in astronomy.

Photographing it

The Sun at 85° cannot be put in the same frame as the temple by any honest means — it is essentially straight up while the facade is straight ahead. Shoot them separately: a filtered long lens on the crescent, and a locked-off wide frame of the facade repeated every few minutes to record the light draining out of the stone. Glasses on from 11:42 to 14:30, without exception

Abu Simbel never reaches totality, so there is no safe moment. Use only filters certified to ISO 12312-2, and be especially careful with a Sun this close to the zenith: it is easy to glance up without thinking. Full guidance on the eye safety page.

Getting here, and fitting it into an eclipse trip

Abu Simbel sits close to the Sudanese border, about 280 km by road south-west of Aswan, and the town exists largely to serve the temples. There are three usual ways in.

  • By air. Short domestic flights connect Aswan and Abu Simbel and are the quickest option, typically allowing a few hours at the site. Capacity is limited and eclipse week will be busy; book well ahead.
  • By road. The classic pre-dawn departure from Aswan, arriving as the sun comes up on the facade — which, given what the building is for, is the right way to see it.
  • By Lake Nasser cruise. A small number of vessels work the lake between the High Dam and Abu Simbel, calling at the other rescued temples along the way. Arriving from the water is the most atmospheric approach of all. If you are considering one for eclipse week, ask precisely where the boat will be at 13:00 on 2 August — everywhere on Lake Nasser is outside the path.

The other rescued temples

Abu Simbel was the most famous of the rescues but not the only one. Kalabsha, Beit el-Wali and others were moved to a headland near the High Dam; Philae was rebuilt on Agilkia island near Aswan; Amada, Derr and the tomb of Pennut were relocated along the lake. Together they make an unusual theme for the days around the eclipse: an entire drowned landscape, lifted out of the water and put back down again.

And the connecting thread with 2 August is a good one. Abu Simbel was saved because the Nile was dammed; the dam created Lake Nasser; the lake sits south of the path. The temple that was designed to catch the Sun twice a year is, by a few hundred kilometres, in the wrong place to watch the Sun go out.

What is the twice-yearly sun alignment at Abu Simbel?

On 22 February and 22 October the rising sun shines along the axis of the Great Temple, roughly sixty metres into the rock, and illuminates the seated statues of Ramesses II, Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhty in the sanctuary. How far is Abu Simbel from the path of totality?

Far. Kom Ombo, the first town inside the path, is about 273 km away in a straight line and roughly 300 km by road via Aswan. Luxor and a full six minutes of totality is around 386 km in a straight line, or something like 500 km by road.

Why is the Sun so high at Abu Simbel during the eclipse?

Because the site is at latitude 22.3°N, just north of the Tropic of Cancer, and the eclipse falls in early August. At maximum the Sun is 85° above the horizon — only five degrees from vertical, and the highest of any location on this site.

Should I do an Abu Simbel day trip on eclipse day?

No. Visiting Abu Simbel on 2 August means travelling away from the path, not towards it, and the site sees less of the eclipse than Aswan does. Visit on another day — ideally at sunrise — and spend eclipse day inside the path.

Is a Lake Nasser cruise a good way to see the eclipse?

Not for totality. The whole of Lake Nasser lies south of the path. A lake cruise is a wonderful thing to do in the days before or after, but on 2 August you want to be north of Kom Ombo.
